Pardon the Billy Joel reference
Friday, September 28, 2012 at 08:38AM I don't normally comb pop music for nuggets of profundity, but occasionally something jumps out at me. Years ago, when I still listened to Billy Joel (I don't much anymore, and not for any particular reason), I identified with his cry in the song "I Go to Extremes."
Darling I don't know why I go to extremes
Too high or too low there ain't no in-betweens
And if I stand or I fall
It's all or nothing at all
Darling I don't know why I go to extremes
Unfortunately, I am a woman who tends to extremes. Too high, too low. It isn't good. I work hard at finding an in-between. Since I was converted at the age of 20, it's been easier, but not without its challenges.
People all tend to extremes, and I see it everywhere, especially on the internet.
Don't homeschool your children, or you will have socially stunted children who don't know how to evangelize and will make poor fashion choices.
Don't sent your children to public school or you will have to bail them out of jail after they bite the heads off of live chickens.
Don't stay at home with your children or you will NEVER be an ezer warrior, and remain frumpy in your plaid shirts and blue jeans.
Do stay at home with your children, because if you don't, you'll end up as a feminist and your children will need therapy.
That book is the best book in the world, if you read it, it will LITERALLY save your life, and IMPACT your future in ways you could never imagine .... (six months later) No! Read this book, it will really change your life ...
Don't read that book, it will poison your mind.
Don't use social media. It will paralyze your brain. You'll become an automaton.
Do use social media! If you don't, you'll have nothing to talk about.
And on and on.
My husband said it best recently, "Everyone stinks at hyperbole."
I suppose we have to employ such extremes in order to be heard among the glut of voices out in the cyber world. It's kind of tiresome. It's often hard to filter these things out.
We need the stabilizing voice of the Word of God. Only He can bring meaning into our thoughts, order from the chaos, and sense from the nonsense. We need to soak in it, dive in it, saturate ourselves in it so that we think God's thoughts after Him.
Here is one extreme I will live with: if you don't read your Bible, you will never know what God's will is.
